Kampung Naga – Tandika Cendrawan

Tandika Cendrawan

KAMPUNG NAGA

Kampung Naga is a village of Sundanese descent located in the West Java Province, in the Neglasari Village area of the Salawu Subdistrict, Tasikmalaya Regency. Its name might sound unfamiliar to us. Perhaps when we hear it, what comes to mind is a mythical creature, a dragon. However, it turns out to be quite different from what we imagine.

It’s a traditional village, but the people of Kampung Naga are open to accepting outside cultures while still preserving the customs passed down from their ancestors to the present day. The fundamental principle embraced in Kampung Naga is something inherited from their forebears: to live in harmony with nature, which means taking care of the environment. By preserving the environment, nature will, in turn, provide rewards and benefits to us.

DESIGN CHALLENGE

From observations and interviews I conducted over five months, I was inspired by the life principles held by Kampung Naga, which we can learn from. In a rapidly changing world that has a broad impact on people’s lives, shifts in cultural values occur throughout the region. Many people in this country have abandoned the heritage of their ancestors, especially the younger generation. I chose a coffee table book approach for my final college project. Through this book, I aim to communicate the importance of culture to various audiences, especially the younger generation.

FIND A STYLE

I began to search for ideas and inspiration from various sources, starting with looking at similar books available in the market, as well as in various print and digital media. For this coffee table book, I adopted a minimalist approach, emphasizing more on photos than text. This book also contains information obtained directly from the local community.

SKETCH AND EXPLORATION

I started with sketches, then created alternative logos, applied minimalist layout elements, easily readable fonts, and warm colors. On the other hand, I also created several alternatives that were applied in digital form.

FINAL RESULTS

It’s a joy to see this coffee table book completed for my college final project. I’m delighted with the result, and I hope it can reach a wide audience to help them learn more about the culture.
